First Days: Night Movies
MATURE NOVEL FOR NEWCOMER CHILDREN
First Days Night Movies was written at a grade 2-3 reading level. Newcomer children will appreciate the 'grown up' feel of this children's novel and the opportunity for success in comprehension.
The main character describes her thoughts and feelings but often doesn’t have the words to say what she wants to say in English. This story is a helpful resource for ESL/EAL students as they navigate a new culture, and is a great springboard for practical discussions in the class related to being a friend to a newcomer, handling difficult situations on the playground, and dealing with learning challenges.
Making friends, dealing with bullies and getting caught cheating on tests are hard enough when you speak English. Being a newcomer makes it even harder. Memories of hard times begin to heal as new experiences bring new “Night Movies”. A visit to a National Aboriginal Day celebration is pivotal for the main character in dealing with the trauma she experienced in her home country.
